A small town square in the historical part of the Old Town, surrounded by gnarled lime trees and, in the centre, immediately in front of the Nikolaikirche, a simple well.

Here, on 1st May, 1877, Julius Baier and Andreas Schneider take the daring step of becoming financially independent by taking over a wholesale business from their former employer, Gustav Ziegler, dealing with paper, writing materials and haberdashery. In 1879, Julius Baier dies and is replaced by Mr Mayer who supplies capital for the firm and becomes its treasurer. When, in 1881, the men decided to buy two roll ruling machines, the firm from being wholesaler becomes a manufacturer overnight. Shortly after this transformation, the firm of Baier & Schneider bring the first business stationery, notepads and exercise books onto the market.

BRUNNEN's History
Back to the overview
By 1893, the firm has grown to employ some eighty people, and as a result of this increase, new buildings are erected in Wollhausstrasse at the eastern boundary of the city to accommodate an office, printing shop, a bookbinding department and various storage rooms for the first time under one roof. When, a year later, the founders of the firm find themselves seeking a suitable trademark for the firm, they recall the old well in Kirchhöfle and take this as an appropriate symbol for the company.
